HISTORY, PURPOSE AND LEADERSHIP OF THE MONTGOMERY COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The Montgomery County Historical Society was legally organized on June 1, 1990, as a nonprofit corporation under Tennessee Annotated Code paragraph 48-51-101. The initial directors were:

The organization received exemption from Federal income taxes by Internal Revenue Service Letter 947 (DO/CG) dated December 28, 1999, signed by Steven T. Miller, Director, Exempt Organizations.

The Society is now located at 189 Tenth Street, Clarksville, Tennessee, housed in the historic L&N Depot building, a City of Clarksville asset. The purpose of the Society is to:

a. Promote interest in and enjoyment of the history of Montgomery County, Tennessee.

b. Ascertain, preserve and promote local history.

c. Identify historic sites and structures and promote their preservation.

d. Hold periodic meetings of a stimulating nature in keeping with the interests of the society.

In recent years, in addition to the many stimulating monthly meetings for members, the Society has held a number of well attended public events, such as historic home tours, cemetery tours, and more recently, re-enactments of moments in the lives of departed Clarksvillians, in an annual/biennial event know as “Dinner with the Dead.”

Not to be taken lightly is the Society’s interest in railroading. Being housed in an historic railroad depot, with a permanent exhibit of railroading artifacts, including a vintage caboose and engine provides visitors with a nostalgic look back into the romantic era of rail travel. We plan to continue that emphasis, and to expand on it.

Traveling further back into history we have found records of the Society which reveal that the first recorded officers were, President Mrs. Hunter Meriweather, Vice President Mrs. Henry M. Lofton, Secretary Mrs. Harley R. Askew and Treasurer Mrs. Harley R. Askew in the year of 1924. We have retrieved those records and are posting them here dating up unto the present (as accurate as we can find from records). There were years during the war when the Society did not record officers.
